Job Description

GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Department of Pharmacy has the responsibility for the implementation and coordination of drug control in the process of providing pharmaceutical care for patients of all ages within the Medical Center. Under the clinical supervision of a Registered Pharmacist, the Pharmacy Technician III assists pharmacists in pharmaceutical preparation, distribution, and record keeping functions in the delivery of pharmaceutical supplies to patients in accordance to department policies and guidelines.

The Pharmacy Technician III performs specialized billing, quality reporting/data analysis, prior authorization support, controlled substances, inventory purchasing, medication reconciliation/clinical support, sterile products, hazardous medication preparation, or Tech Check Tech functions contributing to essential departmental workflow and process efficiency. PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

*Commits to the mission, vision, beliefs and consistently demonstrates our core values.

*Performs standard Pharmacy Technician I and II job functions related to Unit Dose medications, automated dispensing, medication drawers and medication exchanges and deliveries.

*Utilizes complex mathematical skills in computing the preparation and distribution of pharmaceuticals (ratios, dilutions, conversions), creating statistical reports and/or tally logs and proposing cost saving options and alternatives.

*Interacts and communicates with providers, management, and other healthcare professionals to facilitate departmental operations.

*Operates pharmacy computer system to fill medication replacement orders and missing medication requests; accurately credits patient medication in pharmacy computer system as appropriate.Prepares specialized quality functions to assist Pharmacy Leadership.

*Adheres to safety and security procedures to promote a safe and secure environment including adherence to state restrictions on Pharmacy Technician functions, as well as informing appropriate personnel of any detected safety hazards.

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

In addition to the principal job functions contained on the primary job descriptions, the following duties are also required in the department noted above.

1. *In collaboration with Pharmacy Leadership, coordinates and develops the purchasing process for the acquisition and control of pharmaceuticals, equipment and controlled substances.

2. *Monitors prices, invoices and available supplies; notifies departmental personnel of temporary, local and/or national shortages of certain drugs or supplies.

3. *Maintains wholesaler order system and other information on ordering sources.

4. Coordinates the annual inventory of the pharmacy stock.

5. *Ensures invoices are processed on a regular basis.

6. Tracks, trends and reports non-formulary usage; assists in providing accountability for compliance to the hospital formulary.

7. Assists in the management of the pharmaceutical budget.

8. *Maintains a log of recalls and action taken.

9. In collaboration with others, ensures the data integrity of pharmacy information and automation systems; assists in the development of procedures for pharmacy informatics and automation systems.

10. Responds to Pharmacy department requests for data and reports; creates statistical reports based on Pharmacy Leadership requests concerning inventory requirements, inventory staffing and budget preparation.

11. *Serves as a resource within the Medical Center regarding pharmacy inventory.

12. In conjunction with the Pharmacy Director, coordinates/supports pharmacy inventory quality assurance monitoring and regulatory requirements, i.e., The Joint Commission, USP, Nebraska Department of Health Services, Board of Pharmacy.

13. *Works in collaboration with pharmacy staff, pharmacy leadership and medical center staff to manage pharmacy inventory associated with drug shortages.

14. Assists the Pharmacy Informatics team in training pharmacy personnel on applicable Medical Center information systems; develops pharmacy information system training materials.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma or equivalency required. Must be at least 18 years of age. Minimum of one (1) year experience in an institutional pharmacy environment (hospital or health care facility with admitted patients) or a retail pharmacy environment required.

OTHER CREDENTIALS / CERTIFICATIONS:

Registration as a Pharmacy Technician in the State of Nebraska required. Pharmacy Technician Certification from a State of Nebraska approved certification agency required. Examples include: ptcb, ExCPT, UNMC (NE-CPhT).
